A torrent file stores metadata used for BitTorrent. It is defined in the BitTorrent specification.
In a conventional Internet download, a file or group of files is transmitted from one computer (usually a server) to another computer (a client). Data is held in a central location and is retrieved per the request of a single user.
A torrent, however, distributes data differently on many levels. Firstly, a .torrent file is not the actual file being retrieved. The .torrent file is merely data which has information about the file that the user is seeking. The .torrent file is, in a sense, a sort of index of the file being retrieved. The torrent divides the target file into a series of equally sized pieces that are each assigned an identifying checksum.
The transfer of the torrent file is done between many different peers. Rather than the data being transferred from one machine to the next, the various pieces of the file are held on many different computers. The torrent client communicate with other peers in order to check which pieces they have and exchanges them for the ones they need. In this way, transferring files via a torrent is sort of like a lightning fast, digitally automated game of "Go Fish." Peers swap pieces of files with as many different computers as possible and eventually combine the various parts into the whole, requested file.
A torrent file contains the URLs of multiple trackers and integrity metadata about all the pieces. It can also contain additional metadata defined in extensions to the BitTorrent specification. These are known as "BitTorrent Enhancement Proposals". Examples of such proposals include metadata for stating who created the torrent, and when.
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol used for distributing large amounts of data. BitTorrent is one of the most common protocols for transferring large files, and it has been estimated that it accounted for roughly 27% to 55% of all Internet traffic (depending on geographical location) as of February 2009.
Programmer Bram Cohen designed the protocol in April 2001 and released a first implementation on July 2, 2001. It is now maintained by Cohen's company BitTorrent, Inc. There are numerous BitTorrent clients available for a variety of computing platforms.

Prior to the modernist design movement there was an emphasis on furniture as ornament, the length of time a piece took to create was often a measure of its value and desirability. During the first half of the 20th Century a new philosophy emerged shifting the emphasis to function and accessibility. Western design generally, whether architectural or design of furniture had for millennia sought to convey an idea of lineage, a connection with tradition and history. The modern movement sought newness, originality, technical innovation, and ultimately the message that it conveyed spoke of the present and the future, rather than of what had gone before it.
Modernist design seems to have evolved out of a combination of influences: Technically innovative materials and manufacturing methods, the new philosophies that emerged from the Werkbund and the Bauhaus School, from exotic foreign influences, from Art Nouveau and from the tremendous creativity of the artists and designers of that era.

The use of new materials, such as steel in its many forms; molded plywood, such as that used by Charles and Ray Eames; and of course plastics, were formative in the creation of these new designs. They would have been considered pioneering, even shocking in contrast to what came before. This interest in new and innovative materials and methods - produced a certain blending of the disciplines of technology and art. And this became a working philosophy among the members of the Deutscher Werkbund. The Werkbund was a government sponsored organization to promote German art and design around the world. Many of those involved with it including Mies van Der Rohe, Lilly Reich and others, were later involved in the Bauhaus School, and so it is not surprising perhaps that the Bauhaus School took on the mantle of this philosophy. They evolved a particular interest in using these new materials in such a way that they might be mass produced and therefore make good design more accessible to the masses.


An aesthetic preference for the baroque and the complex was challenged not only by new materials and the courage and creativity of a few Europeans, but also by the growing access to African and Asian design. In particular the influence of Japanese design is legend: in the last years of the 19th Century the Edo Period in Japan, Japanese isolationist policy began to soften, and trade with the west began in ernest. The artifacts that emerged were striking in their simplicity, their use of solid planes of color without ornament, and contrasting use of pattern. A tremendous fashion for all things Japanese - Japonism - swept Europe. Some say that the western Art Nouveau movement emerged from this influence directly. Designers such as Charles Rennie MacIntosh and Eileen Gray are known for both their modern and Art Deco work, and they and others like Frank Lloyd Wright are notable for a certain elegant blending of the two styles.

Minus, an entirely new platform for file-sharing, has been created by a Babson College senior, whose career started when he was 9. John Xie created his first website as a child, and a web hosting company as a teenager.
 

Minus is a new tool for sharing pictures, documents, audio and video files, and actually all types of files by simply dragging them from the desktop or a folder into their browsers. The sharing can also be committed though Minus desktop or mobile applications. The client was developed by John Xie in cooperation with Carl Hu, a principal engineer at Amazon.com. Both of the application founders admitted that their goal was to simplify file-sharing and develop the simplest and easiest experience for Internet users. John Xie also revealed that Minus has collected a database of over 1/3 million users, 1 million uploads and 1 billion hits since the application was launch back in October 2010. Minus even managed to win the Babson’s Student Business of the Year Award in April 2011, which brought him $5.000 cash prize. Thus, the application made its first step into the world of file-sharing, delivering simplicity and minimalism to Internet users throughout the globe for free.

However, the program founders admit that it’s yet too early to forecast the future of their creation. John Xie is now planning to focus on the application full-time after his graduation this month. The nearest plans of the founders are to focus on user growth, and they are looking forward to it.

Xie’s hosting company, called Cirtex Corp., was started with capital of less than $20, but today it already servicing over 100,000 domain names and generating over $1,000,000 in profit every year. John Xie said that he always liked the idea of entrepreneurship and has been constantly pursuing big ideas about technology. However, his business was mostly an adventure for him. For example, Cirtex, launched by Xie at the age of 13, was more playing around and enjoying himself and what he did rather than a business or a job. Indeed, John Xie confessed that the web hosting company was more poking around and learning things in business as you go. As all his projects, Minus application was also creating things out of nothing, while having a lot of fun.
